Introduction to Scarring

Scarring is a result of the skins healing response following an insult such as injury or inflammation. The most common skin condition that causes scarring is acne. Acne scars come in many different shapes, sizes and colours.  The treatment for these scars differs depending on the type of scar because of these differences. Our experts at Dermanoir will ensure that you are put on the best possible course of treatments for your skin to help you get rid of those scars.

Science: Acne scarring is the result of inflamed blemishes caused by untreated clogged pores. There are many types of scarring which are more common on individuals with darker skin tones (Black or Afro-Caribbean individuals).

“Most forms of scarring show good improvement using topical skin care regimes, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. All of these treatments are provided for you at Dermanoir.”

Acne Scarring and Whiteheads
Different Types of Scarring
  • Pick Ice Scars – these are deep pits which extend into the skin giving the appearance of ice pick-like punctures over the skin.
  • Boxcar Scars – angular scars with clearly defined, steep vertical edges. Usually found on cheek or temples and tend to cover smaller areas
  • Rolling Scars – Larger depressions (pitted scars) in the skin that have rounded edges and give the skin a wave-like/rolling appearance. They result due to damage to the dermis. Individuals who have had patches of skin that have been afflicted by long term inflammatory acne often develop rolling scars.
  • Hyperpigmentation Scars – Appearing as dark marks on the skin, this is a condition that forms when there is an elevated production of melanin (the substance that gives skin its colour). This condition forms most commonly as a result from the trauma caused by an inflammatory acne lesion.
  • Hypo-Pigmentation – As opposed to hyper-pigmentation, hypo-pigmentation occurs when melanocytes (the cells that produce the melanin pigment) have depleted or lose their ability to produce melanin, leaving a light pink appearance. This condition is much more noticeable on darker skin tones (Vitiligo).
  • Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars – This is an uncommon form of scarring and usually appears as raised lumpy areas across the face and neck but also commonly seen on the chest and back. These often result from severe acne and cystic or nodular lesions of inflammation and form when excess scar tissues develop over the area of injury.
  • Erythema (Redness) – This condition occurs when the small capillaries that are found under the surface of the skin become dilated or damaged, leaving a region that appears red with some visible capillaries. This condition is more common with individuals that have lighter skin tones.

Microdermabrasion: This mechanical exfoliation technique helps to remove dead skin cells from the upper layers of the skin, preventing the blockage of pores and allowing skin to breathe without obstruction. We use a diamond tip to gently remove the outermost skin layers leaving behind fresh, healthy skin. This process stimulates the formation of new skin cells and collagen production. MDA can also give you a deep skin by suctioning clogged pores and removing dead skin cells which can lead to dull and lifeless skin, acne, ingrown hairs, mottled pigmentation and poor skin health. This treatment can be combined with a skin peel for brilliant results and a range of added benefits. To find out more please contact us.

Chemical/Skin Peels: This is a chemical exfoliation technique which helps to remove dead skin cells. Specific types of chemical peels also have anti-inflammatory properties which can reduce the inflammation and appearance of pigmentation and certain types of scars. Having a microdermabrasion treatment added to a skin peel can achieve fantastic results as it will remove all of the dead skin that it created as a result of the skin peel. Here at Dermanoir we have one of the widest range of skin peels available to suit every skin type. We also have a range of combination peels if your skin has a number of issues which need to be targeted.
