Pigmentation and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is particularly common and is a result of injury or inflammation which causes the over production of melanin (the substance that gives skin its darker colour), forming the characteristic dark marks on the skin. This is often a source of great distress for the individual and it can be extremely difficult to treat and prevent.
The management of PIH/pigmentation should first address the cause leading to the inflammatory response (e.g. acne), and then a number of topical agents can be used to lighten the dark areas. Topical agents include hydroquinone, Azelaic acid, retinoids, kojic acid, liquorice extract etc. Other treatment options we offer for pigmentation include microdermabrasion and a course of chemical peels.
